OTTAWA, ONTARIO (Mai 31, 2018) – Canoe Kayak Canada is proud to name Sophia Jensen (Québec) and Philip Turcanu (Ontario) as the first two athletes to the team that will represent Canada at the 2018 ICF Sprint Junior World Championships to be held from July 26 – 29 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Both Jensen and Turcanu earned these nominations with victories in their respective C-1 Olympic events at the immediaC National Sprint Team Trials #2 that took place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the weekend of May 18 to 20.

“Both Sophia and Philip delivered impressive performances to win against older competitors at the Sprint trials on Lake Banook,” said Graham Barton, Chief Technical Officer at Canoe Kayak Canada. “Both have shown they have the ability to perform at a high level and will represent Canada well at the Junior World Championships in July.”

Jensen powered her way to a victory in the Women’s C-1 200m with a time of 53.351 seconds, leading the way in a strong field show casing the next generation of Women’s Canoe athletes following in the footsteps of the World leading Senior Team. Turcanu proved his fitness and perseverance battling through a strong head wind in the Men’s C-1 1000m final on the last day of competition, crossing the line first in a time of 5:12.207.

The remaining spots on the Junior World Championship team will be earned at the National Sprint Team Trials #3 which will be held in Montreal, Québec from June 22 – 24.
