Adam van Koeverden
Bio
Edit BioAdam van Koeverden is one of Canada’s best known Olympians. His resume includes four Olympic medals and eight World Championship medals. It was newspaper advertisement with the headline “Future Champions Wanted” that lead his mother to sign him up at the Burloak Canoe Club in Oakville when he was 13 years old. Four years later he won a bronze medal at the 1999 Junior World Championships in K1 1000.
Adam first made the podium at the Senior World Championships in 2003 with a second place finish in K1 1000. A year later he became an Olympic Champion with a win in the K1 500 in Athens along with a bronze in K1 1000. As Canada’s only double medalist of the Games, he was selected as Canada flag bearer for the 2004 closing ceremonies and the opening ceremonies at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In Beijing, Adam came back to capture a silver medal in K1 500 after a disappointing eighth place finish in the K1 1000.
Adam became the K1 1000 metre World Champion in 2011 when he dominated the field and claimed victory with a margin of over three seconds. He won a silver medal in a tight final at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Adam is an athlete ambassador for Right to Play and has spoken on behalf of many charitable organizations. He is a graduate of McMaster University and completed his Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2007.
