Welland wins bid to host 2013 ICF World Junior Canoe Sprint Championships

Toronto also awarded 2011 ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships

BUDAPEST – CanoeKayak Canada celebrated two victories on Saturday at an International Canoe Federation’s board meeting:  Toronto was chosen to host the 2011 ICF Club Crew Dragonboat World Championships and Welland, Ont., was selected as the 2013 ICF World Junior Canoe Sprint Championships host city.

Canada was the only bidder for the dragon boat worlds but beat out Brandenburg, Germany, Racice, the Czech Republic and Minsk, Belarus to win the bid for the world juniors.  It will be the first time the world juniors won’t be held in Europe since 1989.

“It’s absolutely an honour to be the Canadian host city for the 2013 ICF World Junior Canoe Sprint Championships,” said the Mayor of Welland Damian Goulbourne who led a four-person delegation from the southern Ontario city.  “We worked very hard to position our site as a facility that Canadians and Wellanders can be proud of.  It’s an exciting moment for all of us.”

The competition will be held at the Welland International Flatwater Centre which will also be the host venue for the canoe and kayak sprint events for the 2015 Pan American Games.

Peter Giles, CanoeKayak Canada’s Commodore, says Canada was a bit of an underdog to win the world junior bid.

“The Welland team did a great job with their presentation,” said Giles, a member of the 1996 Canadian Olympic paddling team.  “We were up against traditional Eastern European cities for the sport and powerhouse paddling nations.  We have a great relationship with the ICF and they have a lot of trust in our abilities especially after successfully hosting the senior worlds last year in Halifax-Dartmouth.”

The 2011 IC Club Crew Dragonboat World Championships will be hosted by the National Dragonboat Club.
