It is with deep sadness that Canoe Kayak Canada recognizes the passing of Trevor Woodside, a lifelong paddler, accomplished athlete, and dedicated builder of paddling communities.
Trevor’s paddling achievements spanned decades. As a youth, he was a Canada Games Sprint Canoe Champion, as well as a Canadian and North American Champion in C2 and C4. He later represented Canada internationally as a multiple-time World Dragon Boat Champion, continuing to compete with passion, curiosity, and determination throughout his life.
A pioneer in his local paddling community in Ottawa, Trevor sparked the growth of a strong and enduring outrigger paddling presence in the region. Through his leadership, mentorship, and work with Outriggerzone, he introduced many paddlers to the sport and helped expand access to outrigger paddling in Ottawa and beyond.
One of Trevor’s most enduring contributions was the construction of the Rideau Canoe Club, built as an expression of gratitude to the club that shaped his early years as a paddler. The facility continues to support athletes, coaches, and paddlers at all levels and stands as a lasting part of his legacy.
Trevor will be remembered for his competitive excellence, his generosity of spirit, and his commitment to growing paddling communities. His impact on the sport will be felt for many years to come.
Canoe Kayak Canada extends its sincere condolences to Trevor’s family, friends, and the many members of the paddling community whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 1:00 PM at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 290 Lisgar Street, Ottawa, Ontario. For more information please click here.
