POSITION: SPORT PROGRAM EVENTS OFFICER (through the Canada Summer Jobs Program)
Duration: Summer 2026 (flexible start date, see below)
Location: The position is based in Ottawa. We offer a hybrid work model that allows for the flexibility of remote and in-person office work each week.
Hours: 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work as needed for
events
Hourly Wage: $18.00/hour
Reports to: Director, National Program Development
About Us
Canoe Kayak Canada is the national governing body for competitive paddling in Canada, one of Canada’s top performing summer sports with many Olympic medals and our first Paralympic medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. Canoe Kayak Canada is a member-based organization that includes an intricate network of clubs as well as provincial, territorial and divisional paddling associations. Elite National Team athletes proudly represent Canada at various competitions around the globe – most notably the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Pan American Games, ICF World Cups as well as Junior, Under 23 and Senior World Championships.
General Description
The Sport Program Events Officer will support the planning and delivery of domestic canoe kayak competitions throughout the summer of 2026. This role will be integral to the coordination, execution, monitoring, and reporting of CKC’s national and international-level events. The Events Officer will gain valuable, hands-on experience contributing to high-quality competitions that have a significant impact on the paddling community.
Specific Responsibilities
In this role, you will have the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the success of national and
international-calibre paddling events by taking on responsibilities such as:
- Leading athlete and coach registration processes, ensuring a smooth and positive experience for all participants.
- Supporting on-site accreditation, helping create a secure and well-organized event environment.
- Assisting with logistics planning and execution for officials, event staff, and volunteers, playing a key role in seamless event operations.
- Coordinating procurement and managing inventory for event gifting, awards, and essential supplies.
- Contributing to event promotion, helping build excitement and visibility around our competitions.
- Building strong relationships with Host Organizing Committees (HOCs), key stakeholders, clients, and vendors through clear and professional communication.
- Conducting post-event evaluations, including data collection, survey development, and analysis to drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Skills
- Currently pursuing post-secondary education in Sport Administration/Management, Recreation Management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and adapt effectively to changing priorities.
- Experience working collaboratively in team environments, combined with strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to work independently when needed.
- Previous experience or involvement in sport is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of canoe-kayak as a sport is an additional asset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with comfort using Adobe Acrobat.
- Bilingualism (English/French) and a valid Canadian driver’s license are considered strong assets.
- Willingness to support additional tasks as required to contribute to the success of the program and events.
- Successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal record check in accordance with CKC policy.
Reporting Structure
The Sport Program Events Officer will report directly to the Director, National Program Development and work closely with the Events Team, as part of a collaborative and dynamic team responsible for delivering CKC events. Throughout the summer of 2026, the successful candidate will receive training and support to complete assigned responsibilities and will participate in regular check-ins with the Director.
This work placement offers a unique opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the operations of a National Sport Organization within the Canadian sport system. As part of a small, fast-paced team, the candidate will benefit from hands-on experience, meaningful responsibilities, and diverse learning opportunities.
Travel
On an occasional basis, the Events Officer will be required to travel domestically for the events.
Position Duration
12-week contract
Start Date: Flexible start date between May 14-20, 2026
End Date: August 6-12, 2026 (depending on start date)
