PAU, FRANCE (September 26, 2017) – The Canadian team of Cameron Smedley (Dunrobin, ON), Spencer Pomeroy (Ottawa, ON) and Yannick Laviolette (St-Louis-de-Gonzague, QC) placed 8th this morning in the men’s C1 team event on Day 1 at the Slalom World Championships in Pau, France.
“I am really proud of how the team performed today in Pau. The men’s canoe team scored one of Canada’s best results in this team event,” said James Cartwright, slalom High Performance Manager at Canoe Kayak Canada. “Our athletes have achieved excellent results today while respecting their race plans and facing very good teams from all over the world,” Cartwright added proudly.
The racing conditions on Tuesday morning were perfect and the women’s team of Jessica Groeneveld (Innisfail, AB), Florence Maheu (Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, QC) and Lois Betteridge (Ottawa, ON) were also able to deliver a strong race run while finishing 11th in the K1 team event.
Cameron Smedley also teamed up in the men’s K1 team event, with Michael Tyler (Ottawa, ON) and David Ford (Edmonton, AB). Unfortunately, the crew was later disqualified after one of their boats didn’t pass the equipment control.
The team were feeling good this morning and we are eager to race in the individual events at these World Championships,” said James Cartwright. “We know the course well and starting with team races today set a good tone for the remainder of the week.”
The Canadian team will move onto racing in the individual C1 and K1 races later this week.
