Madeline Mitchell Paddles to Bronze Medal at the 2018 ICF Marathon World Cup in Portugal

VIANA-DO-CASTELO, PORTUGAL (May 29, 2018) – Madeline Mitchell, member of the Manitoba Paddling Association in Winnipeg, won a bronze medal this weekend while representing Canada at the 2018 ICF Marathon World Cup in Viana-do-Castelo in Portugal, May 25 to 27.

“I was extremely honoured and excited to have been invited to race the marathon cup in Portugal”, said Mitchell on her way back to Canada. “Every marathon race is so different and unpredictable. Every turn and every portage have a new challenge that makes the roughly 2 hours of race even more interesting.”

The canoe athlete made her way to the World Cup podium, placing third in the short race event. Mitchell paddled the 3.6 km in a time of 21 minutes and 4 seconds. In second place was Maria Ramal from Spain (20:59.88) and Ukrainian athlete, Liudmyla Babak took gold with a time of 19 minutes 31 seconds.

“The Marathon Canoe Racing Council (MCRC) of Canoe Kayak Canada congratulates Maddy on her World Cup bronze medal in the short race event”, proudly said Darryl Bohm, member of the MCRC.

Mitchell also took part in the long race event of 15.4 km where she placed fifth with a time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 19 seconds. Ukrainian Babak took gold with a time of 1:41:29.76.

“I unfortunately couldn’t predict the unfavorable conditions”, explained Mitchell, “but I’m hoping to improve on my fifth-place finish at the World Championships in September”.

The 2018 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships will take place in Prado Vila Verde, Portugal from September 6 to 9.
