Started kayaking in 2003 at the age of 13. He was immediately hooked on the sport of freestyle and competing. He then went on to win several titles while being able to travel the world with his kayak, some of which include, Canadian national champion, North American champion, PanAmerican Champion, World Cup Champion, and World Champion. I started whitewater paddling at the age of 10. At the age of 13, I spent the whole summer on the river and realized I lived at one of the greatest places on earth for Freestyle Kayaking and my passion for the sport flourished. In the year that followed, I committed to the sport and dedicated all of my energy and effort into kayaking. The following spring, I finished 4th at the national team trials. In 2010, I won the Canadian Junior National Championships which allowed me to represent Canada the following year in Plattling, Germany and finished 6th. I ended my junior career with 12 podium finishes and the title of National Junior Champion.
My sights have now shifted toward the Senior Men’s division. I wish to continue my dedication to the sport striving to continue to improve, push my limits and raise the bar as to what is possible to accomplish in a kayak.

Quinton Kennedy

Birthdate: April 4 1994
Hometown: Pembroke Ontario
Sport: Kayak Freestyle

Quinton took up kayaking about 4 years ago and was instantly hooked on the sport. He was enrolled in the Ottawa Kayak School Keener program at Wilderness Tours. There he learnt the fundamentals of kayaking and respect for the river and other paddlers. He loves to surf the biggest waves he can find like Mini Bus, Big Bus and Gladiator, all found on the Ottawa River. For the last 2 years, he competed in the Ottawa XL trying to earn a spot to participate in the Whitewater Grand Prix. This event showcases the extreme side of kayaking which has kayakers compete on high volume rivers and steep creeks of Ontario and Quebec in Spring flood waters. This past Spring, he found himself tied in 4th and giving him a spot to compete in the Grand Prix in 2016 along side many of his idols in the sport.

Quinton took first place in this years Canada Cup taking the title of Top Canadian Junior and is fired up to compete at the 2015 World’s Freestyle Kayaking on his home water, the Ottawa River. He is also excited to have his younger brother Kalem to cheer on as he also earned a spot on the Junior Canadian Team. The next year will be focused on training for World’s and finding some creeks to run also thinking ahead to the Grand Prix

Kalem Kennedy

Hometown: Pembroke Ontario
Sport: Kayak Freestyle

Kalem has been paddling for about 4 years and thought this was a sport that would be fun to continue with considering the Ottawa River is only 15 minutes from his house. He participated in the Keener Program offered by Ottawa Kayak School for a few years and was coached by some of the best paddlers in the World. He found himself on the Canadian Junior Freestyle team in 2012 and competed at World’s in 2013 in North Carolina. He had a great time and finished out the week in 13th place and top ranked Canadian at the competition.

This past year , Kalem took part in the Canada Cup Pre-World’s / Canadian Team Trials and placed third over all and second in Canada. He finds it very exciting to be part of the team especially because his river will host the 2015 ICF World’s Freestyle Kayaking competition on the Ottawa River. Another special part of this event while be that his brother Quinton will also being competing as he finished first at the Canada Cup. Quinton has been his paddling partner since day one and they head out each Spring as soon as the ice is off the river and paddle into the Fall till they can’t feel their fingers.

Kalem is pumped for World’s and is looking forward to training hard and being as ready as possible to compete and to make the Ottawa Valley proud.

Shaunna Kent

Birthdate: December 8 1987
Hometown: Greenfield Park, Quebec
Residence: Petawawa Ontario
Sport: Squirt

Shaunna has been whitewater kayaking since 2011 when she started with a local club, the Petawawa River Rats. Less than a year later she started squirt boating in a borrowed boat and fell in love with the sport, bought a boat of her own and hasn’t looked back since. In 2012 she made the Canadian Freestyle kayak team to compete for Canada at the 2013 worlds at the Nantahala Outdoor center placing 12th overall in the women’s division and at the World Downtime championships that same year on the Leslie in Tennessee where she placed 3rd out of the women’s division. Having made the team again through the Jimi Cup competition in which she placed 3rd out of the women in 2014, she looks forward to competing on her home river, the Ottawa, in Beachburg Ontario in the 2015 world championships. Kayaking has become her passion and she often volunteers to take new paddlers down rivers to teach them the ropes and is always open to letting those who are curious about squirt boating, try her boat.
