SUDBURY, ONTARIO (August 23, 2019) – The 2019 Canadian Marathon Canoe Championships are kicking off in Sudbury, Ontario this Saturday, August 24^th. Marathon athletes from across Canada will gather at the Sudbury Canoe Club for this two-day competition.

The event will see C1s, C2s, recreational canoes, kayaks and SUPS. Athletes will race across Ramsey Lake until they reach a 250m portage taking them into Bethel Lake. They will then paddle across Bethel Lake and reach a second 200m portage into Ramsey Lake once again for the final leg back to the Sudbury Canoe Club.

“The Canadian Marathon Canoe Nationals provide an opportunity for all paddlers to participate in a weekend of multiple races and friendship,” said Kristopher Archibald, Chair of CKC’s Marathon Canoe Racing Council, “Please join us at the Sudbury Canoe Club, host of the 2019 Nationals!”

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (July 26, 2019) – Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) and the Marathon Canoe Racing Council (MCRC) is pleased to announce Patrick Bilewicz and Andrew Fanok as the two athletes who will be representing Canada at the 2019 ICF Marathon World Championships in Shaoxing, China from October 17^th to 20^th.

Bilewicz (Pickering, ON) and Fanok (Scarborough, ON) were selected as the members of the Canadian team following the Ontario World Marathon Trials which were held in conjunction with the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association’s (OMCKRA) 41^st annual Marsh Mash Canoe Race. The race took place on May 18^th, 2019, on the Holland Marsh and Fraser Creek near Bradford, Ontario. Fanok finished the 24km race with a time of 1 hour and 59 minutes, followed by Bilewicz who finished in 2 hours and 8 minutes.

Both Bilewicz and Fanok will be racing in the junior men K1 events as well as together in the junior men K2 event at the World Championships.

“This event will expand these athletes’ paddling experience and teamwork as they compete against the best in their respective category,” said Kristoffer Archibald, Chair of CKC’s Marathon Canoe Racing Council (MCRC). “CKC’s Marathon community will be cheering for these two athletes!”

This is the second time the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships is being held in Asia, with the first being in Singapore in 2011.

“We are very excited to represent Canada at our very first international competition, added Bilewicz and Fanok. “We have been working extremely hard to get here and are going to make this a memorable experience!”

DAWSON CITY, YUKON (July 3, 2019) – Canoe Kayak Canada marathon paddlers Ivan English and Mike Vincent finished first overall paddling a C2 in the world’s longest annual paddling race – the Yukon River Quest, beating several six person voyageur canoes. The race began at 12pm on Wednesday June 26^th, and finished by 9pm on Saturday June 30^th.

This iconic race is a 715km marathon paddle from Whitehorse to Dawson City, Yukon, with participants stopping only for two mandatory rests which total 10 hours. There were a record 117 teams who started the race this year representing 13 countries. The race is open to solo canoes, kayaks and SUPs, tandem canoes and kayaks, as well as four person canoes and six person voyageur canoes.

The Saskatchewan duo whose team name was ‘#wepaddletogether’ finished five hours before the second C2 crew reached the finish, despite several environmental challenges including low water levels, strong headwinds and forest fire smoke.

English and Vincent had raced together before, but never in the River Quest. “He’s probably one of the best paddlers I’ve ever met,” said English about partner Vincent. “He knows how to manage all the situations.” Vincent even designed and made the C2 that was paddled in the quest.

PRADO VILA VERDE, PORTUGAL (September 9, 2018) – The best Canoe Marathon paddlers in the world lined up this week for the 2018 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships. Eight Canadian athletes took part in the competition that was held in Prado Vila Verde in Portugal from September 6 to 9. Nova Scotian Marlee MacIntosh won gold in the Junior Women’s C1 event.

“We are very proud of our new World Champion,” expressed Canoe Kayak Canada’s Marathon Committee member, Darryl Bohm. “Marlee had a close race with Portugal’s athlete Adrianna Antos. The two paddlers exchanged leads a few times over the 4 laps course of 11.8 km and Marlee finished first, becoming World Champion in this event!”

MacIntosh crossed the finish line with a fast time of 1:07:26,31 followed by Portugal and Ukraine. The last Canadian Junior athlete to have won a gold medal at a Marathon World Championships was Olympian Adam Van Koeverden at the 2000 Worlds held in Halifax, Nova-Scotia.

In the Junior Women’s K1 event, Canada was represented by Samantha Morse, also from Nova Scotia. She placed 25^th in a time of 1:46 min on the 6 laps course of a distance of 19 km.

The U23 team completed their races on Saturday. Emma Mitchell of Manitoba and Michael Lanyon from British-Columbia squared up against a strong field of athletes in both the U23 women and men races. Mitchell placed 12^th while Lanyon finished 22^nd.

The Canadian Senior team concluded the competition on Saturday and Sunday. Maddy Mitchell (Manitoba) placed 8^th in the Women’s C1 15.4 km with a time of 1:33 minutes. On the men’s side, Mateus Braga (Manitoba) and Florian Haskerkehrer (Manitoba) took part in the Men’s C2 26.2 km race where they placed 12^th in a time of 2:16 minutes.

“The Marathon Canoe Racing Council is excited to announce the members of Canada’s National Marathon Team that will compete at this year’s Worlds Championships in Prado Vila Verde, Portugal from September 6 to 9,” said Kristoffer Archibald, Chair of Canoe Kayak Canada’s MCRC. “Drawn from CKC’s member clubs, these athletes have demonstrated the diligence, exceptional skills and positive attitude that characterize our athletes on the world stage. The following athletes were selected at the 2018 Marathon Championships Qualifiers that were held last May on Shumway Lake in Kamloops, British Columbia. The MCRC was responsible of the approval of all nominations following the selection criteria that was posted on the Canoe Kayak Canada website earlier this year.

VIANA-DO-CASTELO, PORTUGAL (May 29, 2018) – Madeline Mitchell, member of the Manitoba Paddling Association in Winnipeg, won a bronze medal this weekend while representing Canada at the 2018 ICF Marathon World Cup in Viana-do-Castelo in Portugal, May 25 to 27.

“I was extremely honoured and excited to have been invited to race the marathon cup in Portugal”, said Mitchell on her way back to Canada. “Every marathon race is so different and unpredictable. Every turn and every portage have a new challenge that makes the roughly 2 hours of race even more interesting.”

The canoe athlete made her way to the World Cup podium, placing third in the short race event. Mitchell paddled the 3.6 km in a time of 21 minutes and 4 seconds. In second place was Maria Ramal from Spain (20:59.88) and Ukrainian athlete, Liudmyla Babak took gold with a time of 19 minutes 31 seconds.

“The Marathon Canoe Racing Council (MCRC) of Canoe Kayak Canada congratulates Maddy on her World Cup bronze medal in the short race event”, proudly said Darryl Bohm, member of the MCRC.

Mitchell also took part in the long race event of 15.4 km where she placed fifth with a time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 19 seconds. Ukrainian Babak took gold with a time of 1:41:29.76.

“I unfortunately couldn’t predict the unfavorable conditions”, explained Mitchell, “but I’m hoping to improve on my fifth-place finish at the World Championships in September”.

The 2018 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships will take place in Prado Vila Verde, Portugal from September 6 to 9.

VIANA-DO-CASTELO, PORTUGAL (May 25, 2018) – Canadian canoe sprint and marathon athlete Madeline Mitchell (Manitoba) will be representing Canada at the 2018 ICF Marathon World Cup. The international competition is taking place in Viana-do-Castelo in Portugal from May 25 to 27.

“We are very pleased to see Madeline representing Canada at this major marathon event,” said Darryl Bohm, member of the Canoe Marathon Racing Council at Canoe Kayak Canada. “Maddy finished 4^that the 2017 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships and we will be cheering for her to do well at this event”.

Mitchell will be racing on Saturday, May 26 in the Women’s C1 short event on a distance of 3.6 km as well as on Sunday, May 27 in the Women’s C1 15.4 km. The short event will include three laps and three portages while the long event will include four laps, three portages and one small lap.
